BUSINESS INCUBATOR ASSESSMENT

BUILDING CAPACITY FOR NEW BUSINESS VENTURES

For business incubators, the pressing question is always one of how effective the incubator is at supporting the new business ventures that are trying to take root under its watch, in terms of educating them, facilitating their needs, and helping them to move forward in their journeys, including in most cases helping them to gain exposure to prospective customers and investors.

To assess this, one must examine – in detail – five (5) key areas of the incubator, namely:

By intentionally addressing and mastering each of these five key areas, any given incubator can become highly effective at supporting its resident business ventures.   It takes a clear focus, however, on building capacity in each of these areas if the incubator is to achieve recognized status as a highly-effective incubator.

The need, therefore, is to know – as a business incubator – how far along one's incubator is, and how well it stacks up against the best in the world (incubators such as, for example, The Houston Technology Center, The Technology Innovation Center, Capital Factory, TechNexus, and Seedcamp).

To assess this, we carry out Global Innovation Institute's Accredited Business Incubator Assessment Process.   This is a comprehensive on-site assessment that critically examines each of the above five areas, recording yes/no answers to a series of pertinent questions in each area.

CONDUCTING THE ASSESSMENT

As the flagship Authorized Innovation Provider® (AInP®) of Global Innovation Institute – Legacy Innovation Group executes the GInI Business Incubator Assessment Process using GInI's world-class assessment methods and tools.

The GInI Business Incubator Assessment is a comprehensive assessment of the incubator and its associated support programs, allowing us to establish the incubator's overall level of effectiveness in supporting the new business ventures it is seeking to support.   It is an indicator, therefore, of the incubator's ability to successfully support each of these new businesses through their initial startup stage and beyond.

The Business Incubator Assessment Process involves three primary steps.

  1. Step 1 is the Preliminary Document Review — Here we conduct an in-depth upfront review of documentation covering each aspect of the incubator and its programs (in complete detail).
  2. Step 2 is the On-Site Assessment — Here we come into the incubator's physical place of operation and undertake a number of on-site interviews with its key leaders, managers, staff, and startup teams.   Using this process, we work through a comprehensive set of questions and record yes/no answers for each question.   This results in a final pass/fail outcome for the incubator (for each of three possible levels of accreditation).
  3. Step 3 is the follow-up Business Incubator Accreditation Assessment Report (BIxAAR) that gets submitted to Global Innovation Institute (GInI) for review and evaluation.   After their review of the report, they will issue their final accreditation determination and share with the incubator's leadership a copy of the report.

Per GInI's requirements, this process must be executed using at least two (2) GInI Authorized Innovation Assessors® (AInAs®) chosen by Legacy Innovation Group, and operating under Legacy Innovation Group's direction and supervision.   For especially large incubators, more than two AInAs® may be used.

The outcomes of this process, as documented in the BIxAAR, will determine whether or not the incubator qualifies for formal accreditation by GInI as an Accredited Business Incubator, and if so, at which of the three levels awarded… Basic (the presence of the minimum required elements), Advanced (the presence of additional elements), or Premium (the comprehensive presence of all possible elements).

It is permissible in some cases, per the AInAs' discretion, for them to issue a preliminary ‘conditional pass’ to the incubator in order to give the incubator additional time (up to 3 months maximum) to rectify certain missing elements prior to their submitting the formal BIxAAR to GInI.   This can in some cases allow an incubator to pass that otherwise would not, or achieve a level of accreditation it otherwise would not.   In these cases, the incubator – after having rectified these missing elements – must present substantiated evidence to the AInAs that the missing elements have in fact been rectified (to the AInAs' satisfaction), at which point the AInAs will update the BIxAAR and submit it to GInI for review.

The final report that will be shared with you by GInI (the BIxAAR) will contain all of the Assessors' findings, a tally of the affirmative and negative answers (and thus a pass or fail) for each of the subsections, and a gap analysis indicating where improvements can be made in the incubator.   It will not, however, include prescriptions for how to address any of these gaps, as those types of insights are the domain of consulting (and not of assessment).

All information gathered, reviewed, and documented within this process is treated as confidential.   The upfront documentation and interview records will remain with the AInAs® and are not sent to GInI.   Only the final report (the BIxAAR) is sent to GInI.

THE ENGAGEMENT

The Business Incubator Assessment Engagement typically follows these steps:

  1. We begin by listening to you so as to understand your goals for conducting the Business Incubator Assessment and/or achieving GInI accreditation of the incubator.
  2. We then walk you through the overall assessment process to ensure that you understand the process correctly and in full.
  3. We then schedule the on-site assessment (including a detailed interview agenda) and set dates for when you will provide us with the upfront documentation (for the preliminary document review).   Preliminary documents are to be provided to us no later than one month prior to the scheduled on-site assessment.
  4. Upon the scheduled date, we bring our Assessors into the incubator and carry out the scheduled interviews with your designated leaders, staff, and startup teams.   The on-site assessment typically takes just one day to complete, though in some cases this can be a long day.   We will establish this duration with you beforehand when scheduling.
  5. Afterward, our Assessors will complete the BIxAAR and submit to GInI.   This typically happens within two weeks of completing the on-site assessment.
  6. GInI will then conduct its review of our BIxAAR and thereafter notify you of its determination, as well as share with you a copy of the BIxAAR.   This process typically takes 4 weeks or less after receiving the BIxAAR from us.
  7. Following GInI's review, you may contact us with any questions about the BIxAAR, or arrange to have us come present it to your organization in person.
  8. Subsequent to this, and as desired, we can also be retained for consulting services to help you address the BIxAAR's gap findings, and in so doing improve the overall effectiveness of your incubator.   See our Corporate Incubators & Accelerators Consulting page for more details on this.

Engage us to assess your organization's Business Incubator.
